What does solar cost for your situation?

A flat, a 3 BHK with an AC, a villa, a shop on a commercial tariff and a farm pump are five different engineering — and economics — questions. Each guide sizes honestly for the situation.

  Solar for your home: what it costs and saves

  For most Indian homes, a 3 kW grid-connected solar system is the sweet spot: it costs about ₹96,000 after the ₹78,000 subsidy, generates 350–380 units a month, and offsets the bill of a typical 2–3 BHK household. Size comes from your monthly bill — not from your roof's capacity.

  Solar for a 2 BHK home

  A 2 BHK home running a fridge, TV, washing machine, fans and lights typically needs a 2 kW solar system — about ₹1,16,000 installed, ₹58,000 after subsidy, generating 230–250 units a month.

  Solar for a 3 BHK home

  A 3 BHK home with one air conditioner typically needs a 3 kW solar system — about ₹1,74,000 installed, ₹96,000 after the full ₹78,000 subsidy — generating 350–390 units a month, which covers the bill of most 3 BHK families.

  Solar for flats and apartments

  Flat owners have two routes: individual installations (only with exclusive terrace rights — common for top-floor owners) or a shared RWA system on the common roof, which uses a different group-housing subsidy track. If your society's roof is shared and managed by the RWA, the shared route is almost always better.

  Running an AC on solar: the sizing nobody explains

  Yes — but not the way ads imply. A 1.5-ton AC consumes 1–1.5 units per hour; a 3 kW system generates ~15 units on a sunny day. With net metering, a 3 kW system offsets one AC's summer consumption for a typical family. Running an AC directly on panels in real-time would need a far bigger array plus batteries — net metering is what makes it affordable.

  Solar for villas and large homes

  Villas and large homes typically land at 5–10 kW: ₹2.3–4.4 lakh installed, with the subsidy capped at ₹78,000 regardless of size. Three-phase connection usually applies, and right-sizing matters even more because every kW above your consumption is full-price with no subsidy.

  Solar for shops and small businesses

  Shops and small businesses are solar's best customers: commercial tariffs of ₹8–12 per unit are 1.5–2× domestic rates, so the same system saves twice as much. The catch — the PM Surya Ghar subsidy is residential-only, so businesses install at full price with paybacks of 3–4 years anyway.

  Solar for farms and water pumps

  Farm solar is a different scheme: PM-KUSUM subsidises solar water pumps (up to 30% central + 30–60% state support in many states, some as high as 90% for small farmers). A 3–5 HP pump pair with a 4–7 kW array replaces diesel costs of ₹15,000–40,000 per season.
